The Inventor Who Kept His Promise : Thomas Alva Edison

This is the story of Thomas Alva Edison. In his childhood, he did many experiments. He was fond of asking questions and he was never satisfied till he got the right answers. One day in the classroom, he asked his teacher “Madam, why can’t man fly like a bird?” His teacher replied, “Because man has no wings.” But Edison did not satisfy. He said to the teacher. “But kites have no wings and still we can fly them in the sky.” All the others boys laughed at him and the teacher, being angry at him, turned him out the school.

Edison’s mother proved a best teacher for him. With her guidance and suggestions Edison made some good progress. Some of his experiments were silly but he learnt a lot from them. One day the bird and the worms scene gave Edison a new idea. He caught hold of a few worms, beat them Then he asked a servant girl to drink it with the result that the poor girl fell ill. In a poultry form Edison watched a hen, sitting on its eggs.

The next morning he got a dozen eggs and sat on them. He got nothing but he had only smashed the eggs and spoilt his shorts. So, he got a good beating from his mother that day.

Edison was very fond of books and read quite a lot of them. His father gave him twenty-five cents for every book he read. Soon, he bought more books and set up a small laboratory. After some time, when Edison needed more money to carry on his experiments, he decided to take up a job in the railway. Later on, he decided to produce his own newspaper.

He bought an old printing press and set it up in a railway wagon. He edited and printed his paper, sold a number of copies and made more money. With the money he got, he set up a small laboratory in his railway wagon. One day in the wagon, there was a sudden jolt and a bit of phosphorus fell on the floor of his carriage and it caught fire. So he was dismissed at the next station .

One day in a factory, the important machine stopped suddenly, Edison repaired it within a short time, and thus, he was given a good job in the factory.
In 1878, Edison made a machine that could reproduce the human voice. It was the Gramophone. In the same year, he began to work on an electric lamp. He promised the Americans to give them electric light in two years. When he said this, all the scientists laughed at him. On 4th September, 1882, for the first time, New York shone in the brightness of electric lights.

Edison made forty war-time inventions and was awarded a madel for his service. He died on 18th October, 1931. Thus ended the great and eventful life of a man who enriched human life and its happiness.

यह थॉमस एल्वा एडिसन की कहानी है। अपने बचपन में भी वह अनेक प्रयोग करता था। वह प्रश्न पूछने का शौकीन था और वह कभी भी संतुष्ट नहीं होता था जब तक उसे सही उत्तर नहीं मिल जाते थे। एक दिन कक्षा में उसने अपनी अध्यापिका से कहा, “मैडम, मनुष्य पक्षी की तरह क्यों नहीं उड़ सकता?” उसकी अध्यापिका ने उत्तर दिया, “ क्योंकि मनुष्य के पास पंख नहीं होते।’ परंतु एडिसन संतुष्ट नहीं हुआ। उसने अध्यापिका से कहा, “किंतु पतंगों के पंख नहीं होते हैं फिर भी हम उन्हें आकाश में उड़ा सकते हैं।” सभी लड़के उस पर हँसे और अध्यापिका ने उस पर नाराज होकर उसे स्कूल से निकाल दिया।

एडिसन के लिए उसकी माँ सबसे अच्छी अध्यापक सिद्ध हुई। उनके मार्गदर्शन और सुझावों से एडिसन ने काफी उन्नति की। उसके कुछ प्रयोग मूर्खतापूर्वक थे किंतु उसने उनसे बहुत कुछ सीखा।
एक दिन चिड़िया और कीड़ों को देखकर एडिसन के दिमाग में एक नया विचार आया। उसने कुछ कीड़ों को पकड़ा, उन्हें एक प्याली में पीसा और पानी में मिलाया। तब उसने अपनी नौकरानी, एक लड़की से उसे पीने को कहा। परिणामस्वरूप बेचारी लड़की बीमार पड़ गई।

एक दिन कारखाने में एक महत्वपूर्ण मशीन अचानक खराब हो गई। एडिसन ने उसकी थोड़े समय में ही मरम्मत कर दी और इस प्रकार उसे कारखाने में एक अच्छी नौकरी मिल गई। 1878 में एडिसन ने एक ऐसी मशीन बनाई जो मनुष्य की आवाज को पुनः उत्पन्न कर सकती थी। यह ग्रामोफोन था। उसी वर्ष उसने बिजली के बल्ब पर काम करना शुरू कर दिया। उसने अमेरिकावासियों से दो वर्ष में बिजली का प्रकाश देने का वायदा किया, सभी वैज्ञानिक उस पर हँसे। 4 सितंबर,1882 को पहली बार न्यूयार्क बिजली के प्रकाश की चमक में जगमगा उठा।

1-Edison was fond of asking questions and he was never satisfied till he got the right answer. 2–Edison was fond of reading books. 3–He spended all his money in buying more books and for his experiments. 4–Some of his experiments were silly but he learnt a lot from them. 5. At the age of twelve he decided to join railway because he didn’t want to trouble his parents for money. This was his selfrespecting attitude.

1—Usually a normal child can’t observe the article so deeply as Edison did. So he can’t ask many questions. 2- A normal child runs away from book. 3–A normal child spends his money in toys, chocolates and on other playing items. 4-A normal child does not take interest in any experiment. 5-. A normal child does not hasitate in asking money from his parents.

In this way we can say that Edison was extra-ordinary child and was very different with other normal child.

1-एडिसन प्रश्न पूछने का शौकीन था और वह तब तक संतुष्ट नहीं होता था जब तक सही उत्तर नहीं पाता 2. एडिसन पुस्तकों को पढ़ने का शौकीन था। 3-. वह अपने सारे धन को और अधिक पुस्तकें खरीदने तथा अपने प्रयोगों पर खर्च करता था। 4. उसके कुछ प्रयोग मूर्खतापूर्ण थे परंतु उसने उनसे बहुत कुछ सीखा 5. बारह वर्ष की आयु में उसने रेलवे में नौकरी करने का निश्चय किया क्योंकि वह अपने माता-पिता को धन के लिए परेशान नहीं करना चाहता था। । यह उसके आत्म सम्मान की भावना थी।
