‘The Psalm of Life’is one of h w Longfellow’s most popular poems. It places a noble ideal before the youth of the nation. The poet tells us that life is not unreal. He does not agree with those who hold that life is an empty dream. Life is real and serious. It has a definite aim. It does not mean mere enjoyment or sorrow. It is full of struggles and difficulties. We should face them with courage and zeal. We should work hard to achieve our aim. The young men should be patient and hard working. They should not care for any remuneration.

‘The Psalm of Life’ लांगफैलो की सबसे अधिक प्रसिद्ध कविताओं में से एक है। यह देश के नवयुवकों के सामने जीवन का एक अन्य आदर्श रखती है। कवि हमें बताता है कि जीवन अवास्तविक नहीं है। वह उनसे सहमत नहीं है जो मानते है कि जीवन मात्र स्वप्न है।| जीवन वास्तविक तथा गंभीर है। इसका निश्चित उद्देश्य है। इसका अर्थ मात्र आनंद और दुःख नहीं है। यह कठिनाइयों और संघर्षों से भरा है।
हमें उनका साहस तथा उत्साह के साथ सामना करना चाहिए। हमें अपने उद्देश्य को प्राप्त करने के लिए कठिन परिश्रम करना चाहिए। नवयुवकों को धैर्यवान तथा परिश्रमी होना चाहिए। उन्हें किसी पारिश्रमिक (प्रतिफल) की चिंता नहीं करनी चाहिए।
