Halku a poor farmer, lived with his wife in a village. It was a cold winter and Halku had no blanket nor any quilt to keep away cold at night. He could not buy any blanket because he had to give all the three rupees he had to Sohna, the money-lender who often abused him. His wife advised him to give up farming since it did not give them even enough food to eat. Halku had to sleep in the open to look after his crop at night.
It was a cold dark night. Halku wrapped himself in an old cotton sheet. He lay on his cot in a corner of his field. He could not sleep. The cold went deep into his bones. While smoking his clay-pipe again and again, he thought about the rich land owners who were sleeping in their warm beds and woolen blankets. In order to keep himself warm, Halku made his dog Jhabra lie next to him. But soon after Jhabra started barking and ran into the field. It seemed to Halku that a herd of cattle had entered his field.
Halku then, went to the mango orchard. He made a heap of dry leaves and lit a fire. When the fire died out, he felt lazy. As Jhabra was still barking there, he thought that no one could enter his fields. He decided not to worry and lay down to sleep. The cattle ate up all the crop.
Next morning, when wife came and scolded him for not keeping watch, he pretended that he had a stomach- ache. The wife asked him to give up farming. Halku said he would work as a labourer and he won’t have to sleep in the open on a bitterly cold night like that.
हल्कू एक गरीब किसान अपनी पत्नी के साथ एक गाँव में रहता था । ठंडी जाड़े की ऋतु थी और हल्कू के पास कम्बल नहीं था न ही रात की ठंड से बचने के लिए कोई रजाई थी । वह कोई कम्बल नहीं खरीद सका । उसके पास जो तीन रुपये थे उसे सोहना महाजन को देने थे, जो अक्सर उसे गालियाँ देता था । उसकी पत्नी ने उसे खेती छोड़ने की सलाह दी क्योंकि उससे खाने के लिए पर्याप्त अन्न भी नहीं मिल रहा था । हल्कू को अपनी फसल का ध्यान रखने के लिए खुले में सोना पड़ता था ।
अंधेरी सर्दियों की रात थी । हल्कू ने स्वयं को पुरानी सूती चादर से ढक लिया । वह अपने खेत के एक कोने में अपनी चारपाई पर लेट गया । वह सो नहीं पाया । ठंड उसकी हड्डियों में घुस गई । जब वह बार-बार चिलम पी रहा था, उसने उन धनी जमीदारों के बारे में सोचा, जो अपने गर्म बिस्तर पर ऊनी कम्बल में सो रहे थे । अपने को गर्म रखने के लिए हल्कू ने अपने कुत्ते झबरा को अपने बराबर में लिटा लिया । लेकिन थोड़ी ही देर बाद झबरा ने भौंकना शुरु किया और खेत में भाग गया । हल्कू को ऐसा लगा कि जानवरों का झुंड उसके खेत में घुस आया है ।
उसके बाद हल्कू आम के बाग में गया । उसने सूखी पत्तियों का ढेर लगाया और आग जलाई । जब आग बुझ गई, उसे सुस्ती आ गई थी । क्योंकि झबरा अभी भी भौक रहा था उसने सोचा कि उसके खेत में कोई भी प्रवेश नहीं कर सकता । उसने चिंता न करने का फैसला किया और नींद में लेटा रहा । जानवर सारी फसल खा गए ।
अगली सुबह, जब उसकी पत्नी आई और उसे ध्यान न रखने के लिए डाँटा, उसने बहाना बनाया कि उसके पेट में दर्द था । पत्नी ने उसे खेती छोड़ने के लिए कहा । हल्कू ने कहा कि वह मजदूरी करेगा और उसे कड़ी सर्दी की रात में खुले में नहीं सोना पड़ेगा ।

जब पशु उसकी सारी फसल खा गए हल्कू दुःखी नहीं दिखाई दिया क्योकि उसने सोचा कि जल्दी ही वह मजदूर बन जाएगा और अब उसे खुले में नहीं सोना पड़ेगा । ]

Ans:- [i] Halku was a farmer of the age of zamidari system. India was not a free country. The landowners were the agents of the British government. They had power. A Tenant could not stand before them.
A modern farmer enjoys the agrarian reforms of our popular government. He himself is the owner of the land.
[ii] Halku borrowed money for the farming from a money-lender like Sohna at a high rate of interest. Now a modern farmer gets seed and fertilizers from an agriculture or co-operative store. He returns the money after harvest. Banks give him credit loans at a lower rate of interest.
