Everybody in the family was excited for Alan was chosen to play in the school cricket match . Alan’s mother came to the gate to see him off and called him out to do his best . His father with whom Alan had practised bowling for weeks, promised to buy him a new bicycle if his side won the match .
On his way to the sports ground Alan saw a very old man leaning heavily on his stick . The old man requested Alan to let him take his arm and see him home . Thinking that he would make up the time he would lose in helping the old man by running . Alan decided to help him . But the old man leaned too heavily on Alan’s strong little arm and tottered like a baby . Alan was growing more and more anxious as minutes passed by and they were still a long way off . Meanwhile a policeman came there . He understood Alan’s problem and agreed to see the old man home .
Alan ran as fast as he could . But the game had started . The teacher who was standing just inside the entrance, told Alan angrily that they had put in young Harold Banks in his place and he was bowling well . Poor Alan returned home slowly and sadly . When Alan reached home, his father who had come to know Alan’s kind act from the policeman patted on his back and said, “Bravo, Alan, we are proud of you . I have bought the bicycle as I promised you . ” Next morning when Alan went into the class, he was given three loud cheers by his classmates . They too had come to know all about his kind act .
ऐलेन को स्कूल क्रिकेट मैच में खेलने के लिए चुने जाने पर परिवार में सभी बहुत उत्साहित थे । ऐलेन की माँ उसे छोड़ने के लिए, दरवाजे तक आई और उसे पूरी कोशिश करने के लिए कहा । उसके पिता ( जिनके साथ ऐलेन ने कई सप्ताह तक अच्छी तरह से गेंद फेंकने का अभ्यास किया ) ने उससे वायदा किया कि अगर उसकी टीम जीतती है तो वे उसे एक नयी साइकिल खरीद कर देंगे ।
खेल के मैदान को जाते समय ऐसेन ने एक वृद्ध व्यक्ति को अपनी छड़ी पर पूरी तरह बोझ डालकर चलते हुए देखा । वृद्ध व्यक्ति ने ऐलेन से प्रार्थना की कि वह उसे अपनी भुजा का सहारा लेने दे तथा घर छोड़ दें ।
यह सोचकर कि जितना समय वृद्ध व्यक्ति की सहायता करने में लगेगा वह भागकर पूरा कर लेगा, ऐलेन उसकी मदद करने का निश्चय करता है । लेकिन वृद्ध व्यक्ति ऐलेन की मजबूत भुजा पर भारी बल दे रहा था और एक बच्चे को तरह लड़खड़ाते हुए चल रहा था । समय के बौतने के साथ-साथ ऐलेन की चिंता बढ़ती जा रही थी और अभी शेष रास्ता काफी लंबा था । तभी वहाँ एक पुलिसमैन आया उसने ऐलेन की समस्या को समझा तथा वृद्ध व्यक्ति को पर छोड़ने के लिए तैयार हो गया ।
ऐलेन जितनी तेज हो सकता था दौड़ा, परन्तु खेल शुरु हो चुका था । प्रवेश द्वार के पास जो अध्यापक खड़े थे उन्होंने ऐलेन को गुस्से में बताया कि उन्होंने ऐलेन के स्थान पर यंग हेरल्ड बैंक्स को रख लिया है और वह अच्छा खेल रहा है । बेचारा ऐलेन उदास होकर धीरे-धीरे घर की ओर लौट गया ।
जब ऐलेन घर पहुँचा, उसके पिता ने ( जो पुलिसमैन से उसके दयालुता के कार्य के विषय में जान चुके थे ) उसको पीठ थपथपाते
हुए कहा, “शाबाश, ऐलेन हमें तुम पर गर्व है । वायदे के अनुसार मैने तुम्हारे लिए साइकिल खरीदी है । ” अगले दिन जब ऐलेन कक्षा में गया,
