Summary In English

Lencho was a hard working farmer. He was poor. His house was the only one in the entire valley on the top of a hill. He could see his fields from there. He was expecting a good harvest. The land needed a downpour or at least a shower.

During the meal, just as Lencho had predicted, big drops of rain began to fall. Lencho was overjoyed. He went out to feel the pleasure of rain. Lencho called the drops new coins. But suddenly large hailstones began to fall. It hailed for an hour. His harvest had destroyed by the hailstorm. Lencho had firm faith in God. He would not let your family die of hunger. So he wrote a letter to God. He wrote, “God, if you don’t help me, my family and I will go hungry this year. I need a hundred pesos for sustenance.

He wrote “to God” on the envelope and dropped it into the mailbox.

A postman showed the letter to the postmaster. He was very much impressed by the faith of the man who had written the letter addressed to God. He tapped the letter. He came to know that the writer had demanded one hundred pesos. He decided to help Lencho. He asked for money from his employees. He himself gave part of his salary. He could collect only seventy pesos. He put the money in an envelope. He addressed the letter to Lencho. He wrote the sender’s name as ‘from God.”

When Lencho came to the post office to check his mail, the postman himself handed over the letter to him. Postmaster was watching everything.

Lencho opened the envelope and counted the money. He became angry because the money was less than he had asked for. Immediately, Lencho went up to the window to ask the paper and ink. He wrote another letter to God to send him the rest of money. But he asked God not to send the money through the mail because according to him the post office employers were a bunch of crooks.

लेंचो को ईश्वर में दृढ विश्वास था । वह अपने परिवार को भूखा नहीं मरने देगा । इसलिए उसने भगवान को एक पत्र लिखा । उसने लिखा “भगवान, यदि तुम मेरी सहायता नहीं करोगे, तो मेरा परिवार और मैं इस वर्ष भूखे रह जाएँगे । मुझे जीविका के लिए एक सौ पीसों की आवश्यकता है ।” उसने लिफाफे पर लिखा ‘ईश्वर के लिए’ और उसे पत्र-पेटी में डाल दिया ।

एक डाकिये ने यह पत्र पोस्टमास्टर को दिखाया । वह उस व्यक्ति के विश्वास से बहुत प्रभावित हुआ, जिसने ईश्वर को संबोधित करते हुए यह पत्र लिखा था । उसने पत्र खोला । उसे पता चला कि लिखने वाले ने एक सौ पीसों की माँग की है । वह लेंचो की सहायता करने का फैसला करता है । उसने अपने कर्मचारियों से धन माँगा । उसने स्वयं भी अपने वेतन का एक अंश दिया । वह केवल सत्तर पीसों ही इकट्ठे कर पाया । उसने धन को लिफाफे में रखा । उसने पत्र में लेंचो का पता लिखा । उसने पत्र उसने भेजने वाले का नाम ‘ईश्वर’ लिखा ।

जब लेंचो अपनी डाक देखने डाकघर आया तो डाकिये ने स्वयं वह पत्र लेंचो को दिया । पोस्टमास्टर सब कुछ देख रहा था । लेंचो ने लिफाफा खोला और धन को गिना । वह नाराज हो गया क्योकि जितना धन उसने माँगा था वह उससे कम था । तुरंत ही वह कागज और स्याही माँगने खिड़की पर गया ।

उसने बाकी धन भेजने के लिए भगवान को दूसरा पत्र लिखा । किंतु उसने भगवान से डाक द्वारा धन न भेजने के लिए कहा क्योंकि उसके अनुसार डाकघर के कर्मचारी ठगों के समूह थे ।

एक संतुष्ट भाव से उसने वर्षा की चादर में लिपटे हुए अपने पके हुए अनाज और उसके फूलों से भरे हुए खेत को देखा किंतु अचानक तेज हवा चलने लगी और वर्षा के साथ बहुत बड़े-बड़े ओले गिरने लगे। ये वास्तव में नए चाँदी के सिक्के समान दिखाई देते थे। लड़के अपने कपड़े उतारकर खुले शरीर से उन जमे हुए मोतियों अर्थात् ओलों को बटोरने के लिए घरों से बाहर दौड़े।

यह शीघ्र समाप्त नहीं हुआ। एक घंटे तक ओले मकान, बगीचे, पहाड़ी की ढलान, अनाज के खेत और पूरी घाटी पर बरसते रहे। पूरा खेत सफेद हो गया, मानो नमक से ढक गया हो। वृक्षों पर एक भी पत्ता नहीं बचा था। अनाज पूर्णतया नष्ट हो गया था। पौधों से फूल झड़ चुके थे। लेंचो की आत्मा दुःख से भर गई। जब तूफान थम गया, वह अपने खेतों के बीच खड़ा हो गया और अपने बेटों से कहा-

“एक टिड्डियों के दल के हमले के बाद भी इससे अधिक अनाज बच जाता। ओलों ने कुछ भी नहीं छोड़ा, इस वर्ष हमें अनाज नहीं मिलेगा।”

वह रात बहुत दुःखी भरी थी।

लेंचो मनुष्य होते हुए भी एक बैल था, जो खेत में पशु की तरह काम करता था, किंतु फिर भी वह लिखना जानता था। अगले रविवार को सूर्योदय के समय वह एक पत्र लिखने लगा, जिसे वह स्वयं शहर ले जाएगा और डाक में डालेगा। यह भगवान के नाम पत्र से कुछ कम नहीं था।
